5/1/2007 - May 2007 SLI Newsletter
It does not take great powers of discernment to see diminution in the Christian worldview. It does take, however, an attentiveness to news reports and credible media. But, when we personally observe change, it is frightening.
We have heard of events in Great Britain, Canada and Australia on the official stifling of the Christian speech. Last month in New Jersey a public high school had a terrorist drill and, you guessed it, the terrorists were Christians raiding the school because their children were denied the right to pray.
In Alabama, we were recently subjected to this same disrespect for our Christian heritage. This month's Educational Update reports what happened before the Alabama Senate Education Committee when a bill was presented that would set aside a time for instruction in public schools on our Christian heritage.
The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld a federal partial-birth abortion ban law. We are preparing an analysis of this for the Alabama Pro-Life Coalition. We will share it with you when it is completed. This court decision is a step in the right direction, even if it is a small one. If you would like an advance copy of our analysis, please email us at the address above.
In other matters, a major effort to monopolize and legalize gambling in Alabama was repelled. The issue is not dead and could return. We will give a more complete report later, but there is something important to which we need to call your attention at this time.
You may have heard that Randy Brinson, new Executive Director of the Christian Coalition of Alabama (CCA), has stated they support this gambling legislation. If you are a supporter of CCA, you should carefully check its positions on issues. This is not the CCA we knew in the past. The one we knew and that was led by John Giles is now known as Christian Action Council of Alabama. It appears CCA has drifted away from its historic conservative values. We will provide a more complete explanation when we report further on the gambling issue.
Thank you for your recent support. Please continue to pray for us and provide us with your monthly contributions. Legislative efforts are taking their toll on our time and resources. Your contributions make it possible for us to participate in these very important matters.
Yours very truly,
A. Eric Johnston
