December 2009
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Thankfully, we have made it through another year. We have enjoyed very much continuing to be of service to those who are in need and in the cause for which we stand.
As we always remind our readers and supporters, in the Christmas season there is potential for abridgement of religious liberties. These most often occur in public schools, but may also occur in the workplace. Keep in mind that public school children have religious rights and Christmas is one of the most important times to protect those rights. Any employer with 15 or more employees on a regular basis is subject to anti-discrimination laws which protect religious freedom.
If you have a problem, or you know of someone who has a problem, please contact us or make a referral. We will be glad to help. We do not charge for these services.
We have gone the first year of Obama’s presidency without seeing the Freedom of Choice Act. Some of what he would have accomplished in FOCA may be found in the various versions of the healthcare legislation which continues to dominate the U.S. Congress. To demonstrate just how important abortion is to the Obama administration, it is evident that they would rather see the healthcare legislation fail, rather than remove abortion funding from the legislation.
We recently met with other pro-family groups to discuss possible issues in the coming year. There are a number of issues, viz., church schools, home schools, abortion, etcetera. Almost simultaneously with that meeting, we became painfully aware of the issue that would dominate – gambling. This month’s Educational Update will provide some insight, but the problem is so great, I am sure we will be reporting more in the coming months. Alabama is on the verge of eradicating unlawful gambling in the state which has taken the form of what is usually termed “bingo.” The gamblers are frantic to protect their vast and profitable enterprise. We have sent our update to media as an editorial. Feel free to publish wherever you wish. We need to spread this information as much as possible, to as many as possible.
As we come to the end of the year, we would like to remind you that it is the best time to make your tax deductible gifts. Any gift we receive that is received or postmarked by December 31, 2009, will be deductible on your 2009 taxes. We have had a very difficult financial year and need to make up the deficit this month. We want to begin 2010 in a strong financial condition. As you see from our gambling report, in addition to our other obligations, there will be much to do.
Will you please send SLI as generous a contribution as you possibly can? We are grateful for your continuing support. We wish you a very Blessed and Merry Christmas.
Yours very truly,
A. Eric Johnston
